- Unique Programs:
- Switching from a cupola furnace to an electric medium-frequency furnace in the metal shop has reduced energy-related emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxide at the plant by over 75%. It has also led to a 2,500-ton reduction in foundry-specific waste.
- The use of process water has also been reduced significantly by shutting down the cupola furnace flue-gas scrubber, thereby decreasing the volume of production-related wastewater by 90%.
- In 2005, Bosch suppliers were assessed in four supplier audits in accordance with an environment checklist and encouraged to improve their environmental performance.
- Also in 2005, Bosch opened its new distribution center for diesel systems in Germany, bringing together all the company's distribution activities. There is less pollution if distribution is organized centrally rather than locally, resulting in a 11% reduction in pollution from goods traffic.
- A number of Bosch products carry the Blue Angel certification, representing a commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
- Rainwater utilization, closed-loop circulation with water treatment, and other water-saving measures promote the efficient use of water.
- In 1970, Bosch began the 3-S Program to make automobiles safer, more eco-friendly, and more economical. The program has inspired many pioneering achievements, such as antilock braking systems (ABS), the electronic stability program (ESP), and direct fuel injection systems for gasoline and diesel engines.
- Product life cycles are beginning to be monitored with the implementation of a Design for the Environment Program.
- SES (the Smart Electronic Start/Stop System) has up to an 8% reduction in both fuel consumption and emissions of carbon dioxide for in-city stop-and-go traffic. The system works by automatically stopping the engine in neutral when, for example, the driver is sitting at a stop light, and re-starting when the system senses pressure on one of the pedals.
- Bosch has its own social service which provides support and assistance to employees. Their offerings include guidance on pregnancy and parenting and seminars on how to balance work and life.
- Bosch Rexroth has become the number one supplier for a principal wind farm company.
- Rexroth is also involved in a research project looking at the potential of harnessing energy from marine currents.
- A vegetable oil cooker developed by BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH for the citizens of the Philippine island of Leyte has great possibilities for other developing nations as well. (Approximately 1.6 million people die every year from causes traced back to indoor air pollution from traditional "three stone" ovens.)
